26 Liz and Tony Ludlow. ATKINSON, JOHN JAMES (b. abt. 1812)

Marriage Certificate: June 1838, Lambeth, Surrey, Vol. 4, p. 233

1838 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Kennington in the County of Surrey
No. 176 18th April 1838
John James Atkinson, of full age, Batchelor, Plumber, Southampton Street; Father, John James Atkinson, Plumber
Martha Sisley, of full age, Spinster; Father, John Sisley, Grocer
Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by me, C Lane
in the presence of John Sisley. Elizabeth Sisley
This marriage certificate is the only recorded marriage between any John Atkinson and any Martha in London from 1837 till after 1845 when (according to the 1861 Census) their first child, Harriet, was born.
The 1861 census gives John James (the son) as born in Camberwell, Surrey, and his wife, Martha, as born in Beckley (or Berkley?), Sussex. So John James seems to have lived all his life in Camberwell, there are no other Atkinson families recorded in this area, with a wife Martha, or children of similar names, so there appear to be no alternative marriages.
John James Atkinson (the son and bridegroom) is recorded as plumber in the 1838 marriage certificate but he appears as painter in the 1861 Census and as builder in 1878 on his son's marriage certificate. These seem plausible changes during his career.
There is still a slight uncertainty because any other marriage which occurred before 1837 would not be recorded in the GRO collection. But it is unlikely to have been before 1833 when they would have been 20. (From the 1861 Census, both are the same age and born about 1813.) 20 years would be very young for that period.

The evidence for Martha Sisley being wife to John James Atkinson (b. c. 1813) rests on the marriage certificate of John James Atkinson and Martha Sisely (married in 1838) being the right certificate. See the source notes for the marriage certificate.

Her name is known to be Martha from the 1861 Census where Martha Atkinson is recorded as wife of John J Atkinson.
