General Notes: Thomas Ludlow of Legoland, Co. Cavan, Ireland
Family tradition had it that a particular tombstone in Kilmore churchyard was
where Thomas stood to listen to John Wesley whose diary records three visits
to Killeshandra and Kilmore, the last on 23 May 1789.
Martin Ludlow quotes Charles Ludlow who claims that Cousin Dora said her great
grandfather was Thomas of Ardee who died in his 40s in or around Ballyhaise or
Castle Terra, Co. Cavan. Charles said the wills should be checked because
cousin Dora described him as a merchant leaving a number of children and
coming from Meath, Louth area.
Charles searched index of wills for Thomas of Ardee c. 1779. Thomas had a son
brought up at Legoland but the name is unrecorded.
Family tradition has it that this son was also Thomas and married Jane Foster
Jane Ludlow, widow appears in the Killeshandra census of 1841 with Foster
Ludlow as a son.

His name depends on family tradition. Harriet Ludlow of Troy House Ballycotton was asked by Martin Ludlow who her great grandfather was and said "Thomas Ludlow of Legoland" without a moments hesitation

Richard (1807-54) married Margaret Gribben
They had at least 3 children ... Joseph (1829-1917) who married Margaret Waddy
(17.1.61), John and Dora. This latter is cousin Dora known at Brighton Road
(Dublin) ... strictly a first cousin of David Ludlow (a fairly elderly woman
in the early part of this century).
Joseph had at least three children. An eldest son Richard of which we know
very little, then John (1862-1957) ... of Kildare Street (Dublin) and Emily.
The latter is cousin Emily who is linked in the Brighton Road recollections
with cousin Dora ... in fact Emily would have been cousin Dora's neice. There
are reasons to believe that Emily emigrated to Canada (possibly died there)
... Mary and Martin Ludlow met a man at Jack Ludlow's in Belfast (this is the
Ludlow of Carbe link, descended from Dick of the Manor and James brother of
John ... at present represented by Noel Ludlow at Comber) ... who said that he
was Emily's widower (now dead).
John Ludlow of Kildare street had trhee sons ... Charles, Ernest and David.
Ernest died (? was killed) in 1917. Charles was father of Hugh of Dunmanway.
David settled at Kinsale. They were both bank managers.
Cousin Emily at "44" was therefore Charles Ludlow's aunt and cousin Dora at
"44" was his great aunt, a second cousin at "44"

John Ludlow of Derrin evicted from Drumkilroosk for ploughingt a field against
agents instructions. Appeal upheld and he was offered a choice of three other
holdings by Lord Farnham (see Griffiths evaluation 1857 or 1859 on Microfilm
at Irish Genealogical Soc.) Also Farnham papers in public record office in
Dublin. Both references cited in a letter dated 20 Sept 1971 to Martin Ludlow
from terence P. Cunningham, St Patrick's College, Maynooth Co, Kildare,
Ireland.

My grandparents were a remarkable couple, they had thirteen children and lived
to the age of 86 and 87. Their great influence on the family has continued
throughout three generations. Early in life somewhing happened which was to
change John's life and help direct the lives of many others. He experienced
spiritual conversion. Here are his ownb words describing a Preaching Meeting
in a National Schoolroom in Co, Cavan. The preacher stood at the
schoolmaster's desk. "With joy I remember the once happy place where Jesus
revealed the sweet light of his face, 'twas in the third row from the masters
desk."
This experience led him to become a Local Preacher and Class Leader in the
Methodist Church -- it led two of his sons to enter the Ministry of that
Church -- it also shone through the lives of my father and the other children.
It is not surprising that six of his grandsons also entered the Ministry, one
of his grand daughters served as a medical missionary for over thirty years,
and four others married ministers, as also did seven of his great grand
daughters. Incalculable good has been done in the church and the outside
world by them and by scores of other descendants.
Killeshandra census (1841) gives John Ludlow (aged 30) as head of family no 2 in Drumkilroosk a farmer with his wife Jane Ludlow (27), his children Thomas Ludlow (8), William Ludlow (5.5) Mary Ludlow (4) Ann Jane Ludlow (2) Richard Ludlow (3 months). His mother Jane Ludlow recorded as dying 1839 aged 60. Moved to Derrin, well remembered by his grandson Richard Nelson Ludlow

The Killeshandra census for 1841 gives James Ludlow as head of Family No 1 in
Drumkilroosk. James is listed as a farmer with his wife Isabella aged 30 and
son William aged 1. His brother Foster Ludlow aged 45 shared his home but was
in Dublin at the time of the census and his daughter Ellen (aged 6) was residing
in C. Cavan. Members of his family who had died since the last census were
daughter Jane Ludlow aged 5 in 1839, daughter Margaret Ludlow 2 months in
1839, daughter Ann Ludlow, 1 month 1840.
In a letter to Martin Ludlow, dated 20 Setpt 1971, Terence P. Cunningham, St
Patrick's College, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland, quotes from the Griffith
valuation of 1857 that James Ludlow held 17 acres from Lord Farnham in
Drumkilroosk. The letter refers also to two Scott families, Thomas Scott and
William Scott. A letter from the same author 16 Dec 1971 points to close
links between the Scotts and the Ludlows saying compare the Ellen Ludlows in
families 1 (Ludlow) and 3 (presumably Scott). This would explain where Ellen
was staying at the time of the census.
Richard Nelson Ludlow adds that James Ludlow continued to farm in Drumkilroosk
and was succedded by his son, Dick of the manor.
