Using the databases

By far the best way of using the site is to buy one of the genealogical software packages such as: Legacy, Family Tree Maker, Brother’s Keeper or Heredis, which run in Windows (Heridis also runs on Apple Macs). These packages cost between $ 20 and $ 50 and make it very easy to search for a particular name, or to keep systematic notes on your family tree, and they provide good displays and reports.

Another benefit is that you can recreate the databases on this web site by downloading the GEDCOM version of each database. You can think of GEDCOM as a universal language by which genealogical software packages can exchange information. You don’t need to learn the language; the software will handle it automatically and the benefits are enormous.

The software I use is Legacy 6.0, because Legacy came top in a 2005 review; it is easy to use and when I asked them for help, they replied immediately with good advice. Legacy is especially good for entering sources of your information, and it produces excellent web pages of family trees. You can see the web pages for each of the pedigrees on this site and you can download a trial version for free.

If you do buy Legacy, it means that I can offer limited support and we will have completely compatible databases.
